Ill Nino, Take 2

Posted on February 12, 2008

The previous Ill Nino news briefing told of new members Ahrue (guitar) and Danny (percussion). This Ill Nino briefing tells of new photos and a new video (maybe even two). This Saturday (June 28) if you should happen to be in New York, keep your eyes peeled for Ill Nino in the streets (shouldn’t be hard to miss). On said day they will be getting all dolled up for the photoshoot for their upcoming album, titled Confession. Exact shooting spots? Not sure…some in a studio, some up in Spanish Harlem, and some…some still to be determined. And then, come July 8th out in LA, a new Ill Nino video will be shot. The video will be for the track “How Can I Live’…which, by the way, is slated to be the first single off the Freddy vs Jason soundtrack (August 11th release date). The video will be directed by Martin Weisz – former video credits include work with Korn and Puff Daddy (or the man formerly known as Puff Daddy) – and there actually might be two different versions of the video made. True.

Ill Nino, Take 1

Posted on February 12, 2008

Last month, whilst Ill Nino was elbow deep in the recording of their sophomore Roadrunner release, we told that percussionist Roger Vasquez and guitarist Marc Rizzo amicably parted ways with the band…Marc, of course, sticking around to record the new album – currently titled ‘Confessions’. Well, Ill Nino is pleased to announce that it has found new members in former Machine Head guitarist Ahrue Luster (who joins the band after a stint with Sacramento band, Juggernaut) and ex-point4hope/God Is I drummer, Danny Couto (now Ill Nino percussionist). “It’s a great new start,” says Chavarri. “Everyone in the band feels amazing about the two new guys and we can’t wait to get out on the road and fuck shit up.” Did You Know? Ahrue has been friends with Ill Nino for quite some time now, as they previously toured the U.S. and Europe together back when Ahrue was in Machine Head. True. Biggest reason for tagging Ahrue as the new guitarist? “From the first rehearsal…he fit in immediately,” tells Chavarri. The band tried out a half dozen guitarists, but chose Ahrue because – simply put – he was ‘the best.’ As Dave describes, “The tightest player and the person who most fit in with the Ill Nino sound.” And speaking of fitting with the Ill Nino sound, the band touts the other newbie Danny Couto as an “amazing percussionist.” Did You Know, pt I? Danny actually played all the Latin and Tribal percussion on the upcoming new record. True. Did You Know, pt II? Like Ahrue, Danny too has been a friend of the band for years. In fact, he actually came out of the same band that bred Jardel (point4hope). It’s true. Ahrue, Danny…welcome to camp Ill Nino.

It’s A Goth Jam

Posted on February 12, 2008

According to the best of our calculations, the last time Type O Negative played a show was back on November 3rd, 2001 (in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). That was their last show until this past Friday’s (Friday the 13th) special showing at CBGB’s in New York. Not only was this their first show in almost two years, but it also commemorated the release of Life Is Killing Me, their first studio album in almost four years (Life Is Killing Me is now in stores). Special show, indeed. One Roadrunner vet at the NY office was spouting off on Monday about how great the show was…about how fuckin’ on they were, especially for being off the road for so long…about how they fuckin’ just jam…about how you just get lost in the music. So enthusiastic was he about the show, we asked him to write a couple words for y’all. They are as follows: Outside: Friday the 13th, rain, CBGB’s, what a mood, eh? For the crowd milling around out front, getting wet and waiting to get in to see Type O Negative, it’s like a high school reunion. People catching up with each other, talking about Type O shows in the past. Inside: More of the same, except drier and with expensive beverages. The crowd is slowly moving towards the stage. The scene is pretty mellow but excited, a strange combination. The band comes out without ceremony, picks up their instruments and begins their opus “unsuccessfully coping with…” and one thing strikes me, about 5 minutes into the song: Type 0 are a goth jam band. Their songs draw you in and make you forget about beginnings and endings, they just ARE. Each part of the show may be broken up by song titles and other means of delineating starts and stops, but the underlying flow is constant. Either way, people responded to the jam and their set was flawless, despite the technical difficulties of heat and faulty stage monitors. The hair was flying….. Watch out. Tomorrow night (June 19) in Manchester marks the start of a 3 week European tour for Type O. Then, it’s back to the states for a headline run starting late July. Until then, check out some pics from Friday’s show at CBGB’s. We give you a few choices: TON’s PHOTO GALLERY here on the RR site (some down n’ dirty – actually, dark and grainy – pics taken by the RR vet who wrote the piece above – as well as some recent US instore photos), or you can check out THIS LINK here for some pics from Scarlett (the first person to post up pics on the TON message board), or you can check out the new www.typeonegative.net for some live pics too. Enjoy. Type O Negative Life If Killing Me in stores now

Through The Ashes Of Empires

Posted on February 12, 2008

Machine Head have announced their new album will be called “Through The Ashes Of Empires”. The band intend to record in Oakland, California at the Sharkbite Studios, with Robert Flynn & Andy Sneap producing. Did you know? Andy Sneap previously worked with the band on their 1997 release ‘The More Things Change’. Sharkbite studio owner Mark Keaton will engineer the recording. Come late July/early August, the album will be mixed by Colin Richardson at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire! How has it been working with new guitarist Phil Demmel? Dave McClain tells, “Phil being in the band has been incredible. Having two guitarists with similar talents has opened up a lot of things that the band hasn’t explored in years. To say we’re excited about this album would be an understatement. I think when people hear what we’ve been up to they’ll be blown away!” The band have named 5 tracks to date: 1. Bite The Bullet 2. All Fall Down 3. Left Unfinished 4. In The Presence Of My Enemies 5. Descend The Shades Of Night ‘Through The Ashes Of Empires’ is due to be released this Autumn.
