Interview Outtake: Slipknot’s Clown on Playing with Original Guitarist Donnie Steele Again

“No. 1, Donnie coming back felt completely comfortable for us. It wasn’t even a thought. It just fell into place. We’re not gonna have some jackass from another band come into our world. That’s just bullshit. I won’t allow it. Donnie’s family. Donnie’s from the stone of the ’Knot. He’s knitted right in. He wins an award, because we’d be in Turkey, and I’d be outside the hotel at 4:30 in the morning, having a big, fat Cuban cigar, and here comes Donnie. I’m like, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ He’s like, ‘I’m just walking out, taking it all in. I went to this church. I saw this place. I took pictures, and it’s just so beautiful.’ And I’m just like, ‘Wow.’ And the next day, we’d be in Russia. And we’d get there at about 5, have a big stogie, and here comes Donnie. And I’m like, ‘What in the fuck is up with you, man?’ And he’s just taking it all in. beautiful person

Jim Florentine from That Metal Show on his favourite SLIPKNOT track:

“‘People = Shit’ because it pretty much sums up most people you come in contact with. I constantly work away from a brief encounter with someone and just start singing that song! I first heard it after my girlfriend just broke up with me, and my friend Chuck said I needed to listen to this song so I could start healing! It’s a great song when you want to let out some inner rage. Also, I can bench press 50 more pounds then usual when I listen to that song!”

Carnifex drummer Shawn Cameron on his favourite SLIPKNOT track:

“My favorite Slipknot song would have to be ‘(sic).’ The song is so aggressive and intense. At the time, it was so different from anything I’d ever heard. It made me try and headbang my face off! It’s the first song on the self-titled album of theirs I ever listened to back in the spring of 2000. I jammed with this guy once. After jamming, he gave me that CD to listen to, so I took it home and it changed my life! I couldn’t stop listening to it. I went out and bought the Disasterpieces DVD and studied Joey’s every move. Slipknot’s music has heavily influenced the way I play and the way I write. Raw, heavy, and pissed off.”

Demon Hunter vocalist Ryan Clark on his favourite SLIPKNOT track:

“My favorite Slipknot song is ‘Duality.’ I remember first hearing the song when they debuted the music video, which added an amazing visual element. The gritty energy and stripped-down aesthetic really made the song feel that much more raw. I think this song is Slipknot at their most creative. I love the mix of heavy and melodic–it moves seamlessly between the two. This song is a perfect example of how pissed a song can sound without having to be full throttle the whole time. I love the subtle but eerie piano intro and the way Cory whispers the first six words. It’s haunting and beautiful at the same time. All of these delicate balances within the song bring even more meaning to the song’s title. This song has always been a source of creative inspiration for me. Songs like this are what bands like Demon Hunter strive to write. It’s got it all–heaviness, emotion, grit, power, melody, killer riffs–all wrapped up in a creative and unique package.”

Interview Outtake: Slipknot Drummer Joey Jordison on First Learning of Paul Gray’s Death

“I was on a plane [back home to Iowa], and I landed, and my phone had, like, 80 messages on it. And my phone rang and it was my manager, Cory [Brennan], and he told me, and, man, I went berserk. I kind of went into shock. I was like, ‘Why are you telling me this now?!’ Cory is like, ‘I’m telling you this, Joey… Calm down…” I’m sitting next to this girl, this girl is freaking out, and I’m, like, thinking of going to jail because I’m starting to flip. Well, I smashed my phone, like, on the plane in front of everybody and, like, they do have police kind of coming after me. I’m like, ‘Why are you telling me this?!’ He’s like, ‘Well, because once you get off that tarmac, people will be saying, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’” Because here [in Iowa] we’re almost bigger than our governor…well, actually we probably are. So, yeah, it was pretty crazy. I lost my best friend, you know. We lost a musical soulmate.”
