“[Audio Secrecy was] spontaneous, but we went into it knowing roughly what we were doing.”, Stone Sour guitarist Jim Root tells Subba-Cultcha, “The biggest hurdle with this album was trying to pick between thirty-odd songs, and making them into a record. In the time between we’d all been writing, and everybody had written so much material that it was hard to put everything together. Of course I don’t write any lyrics or vocal melodies so I had to push the 8 or 9 songs that I’d written in Corey’s direction and see which ones he could come up with ideas for. It just worked out the way it worked, and I’d love to have more time to spend actually in the studio rather than just doing pre-production or whatever, you know?“

The site caught up with Jim last October when the band were on their co-headline tour with Avanged Sevenfold, and they not only discussed the tour but the new release and the pressures of getting Stone Sour albums written and recorded around his and band-mate Corey Taylor’s Slipknot schedule.

“When Corey and I are done with the Slipknot album cycle we get right in working on Stone Sour stuff, most of which is written by all of us individually while we’re on tour, or while we’re on breaks between tours…” Jim continues, “Once we’d figured out what we were going to put on the record the whole recording process was really fast. I don’t really like that, it’s difficult as you’re constantly getting new ideas about different ways to layer things, every so often an arrangement idea will pop up, or whatever. It seems like every time that we do a record we’re really under the gun with the schedule, there’s pressure to get out and get on tour. Y’know, you’re always hearing things differently the more that you work on it, and so you kind of have to abandon it before you’re really done, in some ways.“
