Posted on February 12, 2008

In what is a very appropriately chosen song, Theory Of A Deadman will be shooting a new video sometime later this year. The song, “Make Up Your Mind.” Date of the video shoot, minds have not been made up just yet – could be as early as November, could be later on in December…

Roadraging Bristol

Posted on February 12, 2008

First time I’ve been able to see KsE live. Same for Five Pointe O. Second time for 36 Crazyfists. Have to say, was blown away by all 3 bands. And so was everyone else in the Bristol Academy from what I could see. “Fuckin’ brilliant”, grinned Brock, vocals of 36 Crazyfists. “We’re really excited to be playing the UK,” said Mike, KsE bassist, “everyone has said that here is the place so I guess in Europe the UK is where we’ve been wanting to play the most.” Plenty of crowd surfers keeping security busy. Plenty of people pleading with security to stay in at the end of the show so they could get autographs from the band members who came out to meet anyone who wanted to say hi. KsE came on early having heard that many people had early trains to catch in order to get home so they wouldn’t half the set, and paused more than once to show their surprise and appreciation for the warm reception they’ve been receiving. It seems you guys here in the UK like these 3 bands. Post show, a RockSound journalist spent the night on the KsE tour bus preparing an On The Road feature so watch out for that in an upcoming issue. All were very well behaved we heard from the journalist in question this morning, just drinking beer, chatting, and watching ‘That’s Life’ Esther Ranzen videos?! We didn’t delve deeper. Today, we’re all in Exeter, and being only 1.5 hours from Bristol, everyone should be well rested. Seeing as this is the first full-on sleeper tour bus for any of the bands, they’ve been adjusting to sleeping in a small coffin-like bunk while hurtling round UK roads in the middle of the night. We’ll be bringing you tour reports from the bands themselves soon so watch this space.

Photoshoot Wednesday

Posted on February 12, 2008

So, what’s going on in Atlanta, Georgia today? Our art director flew on down there earlier this morning, to meet with the boys from doubleDrive. Topics of discussion? Tomorrow’s (Oct 16) photoshoot and album art. Where will doubleDrive’s inaugural photoshoot with Roadrunner take place? “We don’t know,” replies dD guitarist/vocalist Donnie. Actually, they do have a couple ideas, one including some bridge/tunnel location on the way to Cabbage Town. True. But, know that locations will be scouted today. Jonathon Mannion will be residing over tomorrow’s shoot. Weather for the photoshoot? Well, reports from Atlanta tell it is raining on and off today…come to think of it, that was the weather yesterday in NYC whilst our art director was still here. Coincidence? And you know it’s been raining nonstop in the UK lately. As for the music, we were truthful when telling the doubleDrive album would be mastered last week…it most certainly was. However, a slight sequence change has been made (ditching “Fed Up” in favor of “The Hand”…something about the use of the English language). The band received the new master just this morning, and this should be to be the final sequence.

The Whole Damn Thing

The Real Subject

Posted on February 12, 2008

Earlier this year Rumbulfish recorded their Roadrunner debut, a release which looks to hit the streets early next year (see MUSIC section for early demo). So whilst we have the time, a look back at the recording process, PT I… Rumbulfish recorded in studios from mid-July thru mid-August, drums done at Ocean Way and guitar, bass, & vox at Third Stone. During this time (in the midst of recording), we sat down and asked the band a few questions. The first part of our interview is as follows: Jason DeCosta (guitar): We are done with pre-production. This is actually recording the album tracks. And so far we are finished with the drums and we are starting on bass. Question: And is that for all the songs that are going on the record? Jason: Yes, that’s for all the songs. We are recording 14 and we are probably going to put 10 or 11 songs on the album. All of Possum’s (drums) tracks are done and Dungis (bass) is working on his tracks. Mike (vocals) and I are going to wait until we are at our other studio, Third Stone, which we are going into Monday to begin recording our tracks. Actually, Mike and I do our stuff together really well because we have to counter melodies and stuff like that. We kind of write together. Well we actually write everything together. But, Dungis and Possum are the backbone and it’s good to get their stuff done, the foundation. Q: Are all the songs completely ready to go, like lyrics written, etc.? Jason: Mostly. Mike has most of the lyrics written and I have most of the music written. But we just have little changes, like Mudrock came in and he did someí¢ä‰åŒ_ (Laughing: someone is singing “Mama Mia” in the background) Mike Ryan (vocals): What was that? Jason: Is that the dog singing an Italian song? Jason: Me and Mike are a team and we write most of everything. We have about 93 percent of everything done. Then Mudrock makes a couple of little changes here and there…Then Mike was working on a couple of other melodies that he wanted to experiment with and then I wait for him to come up with those melodies because I like writing guitar melodies over the melodies he has to go with what he’s doing… Q: Vocal melodies? Jason: I will write guitar melodies in the back to supplement his vocal melodies. Sometimes we wait. I wait for him to come up with the melodies and I’ll write something behind it. Or sometimes I’ll bring in a guitar riff and he will write something to it. There’s a bunch of different ways to go about it. Q: Do you have any working titles for songs? Jason: All the working titles are done for the songs and the subjects are done. Mike finished those. All the bass is done. All the drum lines are done. Everything is done. I would say about 90 percent of my guitar is done in my mind because I have not recorded it yet. But I will be adding stuff on top of that to fill it out. Q: When you say subjects, what do you mean? Mike: I want that dog to answer the question. Jason: He starts singing our songs. (Laughing) Mike: Actually the dog writes all my melodies. Q: Jason was saying all the subjects are picked. Does each song have a different subject or do you have one main story going on for all your songs? Is each song a chapter? Jason: Is it like Pink Floyd “The Wall”? Mike: Honestly, it’s not a conscious thing. I write from a stream of consciousness. I have a subconscious story that’s building upon itself that I can’t really figure out what each thing means until after I write it. It’s kind of like my own little therapy. I express everything and I go back and say “Oh, that was about this and that was about that” and it kind of makes a story but it all basically revolves around a coming of age thing. Growing as a person, making mistakes and bouncing back off mistakes. This album’s subject matter had got a lot to do with relationships, not just with women but with everything. Q Like general life, growing experiences? Mike: General life. Sometimes it becomes a metaphor for what I am talking about and sometimes it’s actually the real subject. Thanks to Chris in our US office for doing the interview… and of course Rumbulfish. more to come…

Roadraging Nottingham

Posted on February 12, 2008

Just got off the phone to RR Rep Alison.. naturally asked how how last night’s Roadrage show in Nottingham at Rock City went. She tells, “Brilliant.. I don’t know what to say.. everyone was just totally awesome, the crowd were singing along to all the songs for all the bands!” Did you know Howard has stage fright before every show? Tiz true… certainly doesn’t stop him putting on a blistering performance though. “Kerrang! magazine came down, and were doing vox pops and all the comments were really great – a good mix of which bands people were down to see too, all cool. We ran the first Roadrage raffle from K! magazine, we took the winner Amy backstage and she took loads of photos and got all her stuff signed and got to hang out with all 3 of the bands. It was great, coz she was all like ‘I never win anything!'” Awesome. “Today is Bristol and I’m having a nightmare, all my trains are delayed or cancelled and my journalist is on his way to the venue already…argh…” We took pity on Alison and let her go back then to being suffering press officer. Words from the bands to come.

Feel The Roadrage

Posted on February 12, 2008

Killswitch Engage, 36 Crazyfists, and Five Pointe O are in the country. The Roadrage Tour has begun. KsE & 36 CF arrived at Gatwick yesterday, Five Pointe O just this morning. With two 12-bunk tour buses loaded up it was straight up to Nottingham for tonight’s show. “It’s our first real tour bus,” tells Brock (vocals for 36 Crazyfists) excitedly. Welcome to the delights of coffin-like bunks y’all. As of right now, 3:15pm, most of Five Pointe O are sleeping… trying to make a rapid adjustment to the different time zones! Some of Killswitch Engage have been hanging out, getting ready to soundcheck shortly. “Mike gave me this weird cigarette”, says Alison, RR Rep on the road. “It’s perfectly legal, some strange indonesian herbal cigarette with sugar in it?! It’s made my tongue numb.” Let the games begin.
