Deathride’s Secret Weapon

Posted on February 12, 2008

Coal Chamber/Deathride frontman Dez Fafara has unveiled Deathride’s secret weapon. Upright Bass. We’ll let Dez explain, “I’d like everybody to know that we’re getting ready to break new ground in the heavy metal scene. Deathride will be the first heavy metal band to record a full-length album using only stand-up bass, don’t be fooled by what your seeing in videos by other bands. We will be the first to use this instrument in heavy metal music, ever. We are very proud to be bringing back the backbeat which has been lost since people stopped using this big beautiful instrument, the upright bass.”

Thongs ‘N’ Songs

Posted on February 12, 2008

Capes, brooms, thongs, broken guitars, nakedness, and Gareth Gates… Stone Sour’s London show. Read it and hold your sides should they split with laughter. Stone Sour – London Astoria February 26, 2003 THE FAN – ‘Empathy’ from www.stonesour.tk The day started off for me as any other, I woke up…. I had jam on toast. I got a newspaper….. read it….. Fuck I was getting too excited! Anyways me and my friend Ben met my bro after he finished work, and we jumped on the ten past 6 bus to Oxford Circus. When we arrived at the Astoria – The line was beyond imaginable, it was so long, and I completely couldn’t believe how popular Stone Sour are. When I eventually got to the front of the stage I left my bro and my friend behind at the side near the bar. I was in no mood for talking, I wanted to go fucking crazy and listen to some fucking rock and roll!!! The first band, whoever they were… [RR sez: Winnebago Deal] actually rocked, but it was a shame no one else liked em really, I enjoyed their set, especially the last song! Then down came the ‘rock-starish’ banner of Saliva’s new album cover. Meh, I wasn’t looking forward to this……They played a load of songs, a lot of people seemed to like them, I didn’t, it was boring, I was getting hot, I was getting hurt for no FUCKING REASON. I was getting pissed off, Stone Sour were the god-damn remedy and I knew it. Josey Scott ended the set with the message -“blah blah Saliva will definitely be back”. But even though I thought the guy was a jerk, I’d certainly not wanna meet him in a dark alley – The guys fucking huge and he sports the biggest fucking forehead I have seen in my life!! It was inspirational to say the least!! Oh dear, now it was time for SS, and it was getting to me – bad. As the lights went down and the freaky Clockwork Orange music came on (which I whistled!! ), about 100 people just rammed forward and there was no turning back, it was gonna be brutal, and I was right….. Get Inside was the obvious opener, my knees just trembled so much and my hands were shaking, no fucking lie. I was so hot, and pent up with fucking aggression, I was going nuts to say the least. The guys were on top form as ever, leading into Orchids and Monolith, Cold Reader, Take A Number etc. Jim was great, he’s so fucking huge it’s unreal, Josh was confusingly very smiley during the set, he also sang every song – I was always so sure that he was the quiet one, weird? – Shawn fucking rocked as well!! I admire that mans beard so much…… :beard: Corey started talking about how music was being poisoned etc. He held up a poster of the British stammering pop-dimwit Gareth Gates. Which Corey had blatantly drawn a pentagram and a Jonathan Davis-esque goatee on! He ripped the piss out of GG, mocking his cover of ‘Spirit In The Sky’. So many people laughed, what an entertainer the GBM is!! The band also played Rules and Cynic, which absolutely RAWWWKKKDDD! but to my surprise, not many people actually knew the song – It was weird being the only one out of the 60 people around me singing the song like a nut!! Soon, Corey whipped out his guitar and played Bother, absolutely amazing, I mean, every single person sang, it was great, amazing. Near to the end of the set – the band played the rest of the album -‘Choose’ was particularly insane – the crowd loved that song. Corey also gave a shout out the guys in the balconies – some woman booed the people in the balconies and Corey said that she shouldn’t boo them – they just came here to WATCH the show- It’s not their fault they’ve got rickets in their legs! The guy’s fucking hilarious, an all-round entertainer! At the end of Tumult I crowd surfed – then members of Saliva came onto the stage and began ‘cleaning up’ – Josey handed Corey a broom and he held the broom upright as he sang the rest of Tumult. It was fucking great. So, to the least, it was the best concert I have ever been to. I love this band more than ever, and Id give anything to see them perform live again. Thanks for a great night guys!! Scott (Emp) THE ROADRUNNER REP – Paul We arrived at the venue close to the time the doors were supposed to open and there were so many kids waiting outside, we greeted the Street/E-team meet and greet dudes and handed out their VIP passes to meet the band. Once inside the venue and the dressing room we were all hanging out and chatting about the past shows and tonight’s sellout. Josh’s original plan for the day was to spend the day shopping in Camden, looking for an ultra rare copy of Metallica’s Black Album on vinyl, unfortunately he passed a rather nice Ibanez guitar and decided his fund’s were better aimed that way!! Next Corey burst through the door shouting “Fuck me!!!! Have you seen the queue, I’ve never seen anything like it!” Everyone agreed and I don’t think it helped the pre-show nerves!! I missed the opening band, whoops, my bad, but I did check out Saliva, mainly due to the fact I knew Stone Sour had something planned. It was the last night of a massive European tour, tradition calls for the last show to be a prank filled fun packed time for all and no one was disappointed!! During the second Saliva song Sol, a Stone Sour crew member, ran out on stage in his pants jumped around for a while and ran off… Funny but that wasn’t all they had in store. During Saliva’s final song “My Disease’ Corey strolled out on stage in a thong, fashioned from parts of a silver bead curtain (nicked from the dressing room), duct tape and a pink sock!!! Yes that’s right folks, he was naked apart from a Blue Peter style crafted thong!! No double sided sticky tape here though (Ouch, that could have hurt), wearing his hair in pig tails!! and carrying a sign exclaiming “I love Josey” Nice Corey, very nice!!!! *Note if anyone has any pictures of this, we would love to receive them by post or email – and we might even reward you for your efforts…. Stone Sour’s show started with the blistering ‘Get Inside’, the stage was a mass of moving bodies, and the crowd were just as rabid, lapping up every riff and every word that came from the stage. The band went through every song from their self titled debut, Blotter, Blue Reader and Inhale being some of the stand out tracks for me, along with a couple of non album tracks, highlight of the set still has to be ‘Bother’, the crowd sang as loud as ever and Corey was visibly moved by the crowd response. During Stone Sour’s final song, Saliva did get their own back, arriving on stage in bin liner capes, with brooms, water pistols and again in their pants (what is it with these American’s huh?? Do they always have to be naked??) Very funny stuff guys… The show finished with Josh giving one lucky fan his guitar and Jim and Corey destroying one of Jim’s guitars. Corey later told me that was a mistake, whoops, they broke a perfectly good guitar!! Too soon the absolutely blinding show was done, another great night out in London… here is to the next time Stone Sour hit these shores, in the not too distant future…

Delayed & Bumped

Posted on February 12, 2008

Mark, Jim, and Rob of Chimaira are now safely back home in the USA. There is life after Lincolnshire. Nothing is ever that simple though as you’ll learn from Mark’s report below… Day ?? – Delayed, Bumped. Howdy. Well, we are finally back in the States. Our last day spent in England was amazing. We got to see all of the sites in London (Big Ben/Parliament etc..) we did a cool radio interview for XFM, and we hosted a private listening party for the new record in the area of London called Soho. The bar we did it at was called the Intrepid Fox. It ruled because everywhere you looked there was some bad ass metal poster from the 80’s. Bands like Iron Maiden, Sepultura, Pantera etc.. This was the 2nd bar we have been to in London that plays metal music really loud and has tons of cool memorabilia. (Garlic N’ Shots being the other) The listening party went off really well. We had dudes from RR UK, Metal Hammer, Kerrang!, Total Rock, street and e teamers as well as Defweb from the PRP. It was a good night of booze and tunes. It was really cool of RR to put together this entire shindig. So the next morning we get to the airport, get on our plane, get wasted on the plane ride and arrive in Washington, DC an hour early. (we already had a 2 hour layover, this now made it 3) Here we have 3 band dudes drunk of our asses trying to be civil in an airport, so we decide to sit at our gate and just chill. All of us passed out, then woke up to “We are sorry but flight … to Cleveland has been delayed by at least 45 minutes.” “Whatever” I say, go and grab some food come back and I look at the clock and our plane is already 2 hours late. (This making it 5 hours since we landed) Starting to come down from the buzz, we all get a bit frustrated and start feeling a bit ill. 6 hours after landing in Dullus International, we board our plane. 2 minutes and 15 seconds later, we deplane, and go back to the gate. 2 hours later (8 hours 2 minutes and 15 seconds we have been in DC) we are told that the flight is canceled. 1.5 hours later, we get our hotel and cab voucher from the airline. What a sweet deal, we get put up at a semi decent hotel after waiting a total of 9.5 hours, 2 minutes and 15 seconds! Hung over and miserable we forged on to our hotel, got some well deserved rest, woke up and came home on the next flight. Nothing ever goes perfect for us, but at least we are home. Can’t say I am looking forward to getting on a plane again Monday morning, but I am looking forward to getting to LA to see friends and do the video. Oh ya, so about the mixes! They sound amazing, I can’t believe how good they sound. After the record is mastered, we will try to get a little clip online for ya! Till the next time….. Mark

20 Countries, 8 Weeks

Posted on February 12, 2008

Ever wonder what it would be like to tour 20 different countries? What it would be like through the eyes of Max Cavalera? Sure ya have…well, wonder no more. Since January 27th, Soulfly has been on tour in Europe, and will be until the end of March – 20 countries in eight weeks. Read below for a bit of Max’s tour diary from the travels thus far. The entire European tour Diary spanning the whole tour will be featured in the July ’03 issue of US magazine Metal Maniacs. Until then, read below… 1/26/03 We arrived in Copenhagen in the evening, 7:00 pm, surprisingly more alert and rested than we expected to be after the fifteen hours of traveling we had just gone through. We waited for weeks for this tour to begin – 20 countries, 8 weeks. Russia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Norway, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Greece, and on. The last time we had done this thorough a tour was on the 1993 Chaos AD Tour. We knew what to expect and we got it. The Pumphouse in Copenhagen had sold out quickly. We felt at home, we played there several times before – the crowd raged and gave us their best. A ferry crossing awaited us so we said goodbye to Denmark and hello to Norway. 1/27 Oslo, Norway. The days are getting shorter, darker, and colder. This doesn’t stop the fans that are outside all day long. We breeze through the day and the show. The Scandinavian crowd pleases us, begs for more and accepts it savagely. Next stop, Stockholm, Sweden. We cut through the icy landscape at night. Except for a few trucks, we are one of the few vehicles traveling on the frozen road. 1/28 Oversleeping much later than normal, and it never got light? Can it even be dusk? No, it’s 2:00 pm and dark is approaching. The fans are outside, we can count on them. They tell us there are plenty of tours now, but no one international. 1/29 Today we traveled 8 hours on a ferry from Sweden to Finland. We watched out our window as the ship pushed icebergs out of our path. The air is bitter cold and the Baltic Sea quite frozen. We arrive at night in Helsinki. 1/30 Press all day long and a sold out show at night. It is the first Soulfly show ever in Finland, and the insane crowd shows their appreciation. Actually it took only two hours for the show to sell out. 2/1 7:00am – dropped off at the train station. It took until midday to arrive in St Petersburg. The crew left for the hockey arena to set up while Gloria and I went on a tour of the Hermitage – the palace of the Russian Tsars. We marveled at the treasures and spectacular architecture. Never had we been in such an elaborate palace. Over three million pieces of art which was collected for 300 years of reigning. With Catherine the Great putting the wheel of acquiring art into motion. We were taken into the very staircase the Bolsheviks stormed up and into the room the Tsar’s family was arrested in. As we know months later, the entire family was murdered at the order of Lenin. Three thousand raging fans awaited us at the hockey arena. Russia has come a long way in thirteen years since we first played here in 1991. The police used to batter the kids and now only professional security watches them mosh. They bring their official CDs to sign and they buy our merch. We were the first international group to EVER do a merch deal in Russia. At midnight, we boarded a train to Moscow, which would arrive at 9:30 am. 2/2 We awoke about 4:00 am, as the lady watching our train car popped our door lock open. Thinking this unusual, Gloria went to the hall and noticed no one…but that all of our doors had been popped open. Believing it to be some train procedure, Gloria locked our door again and returned to bed. There were small cabins with two small bunks to sleep on. In the morning, brief cases and wallets were mysteriously missing. The police were called at the Moscow station, and the lady who opened our doors was detained. The wallet was found with all of the money gone and the briefcase was gone too. We learned our lesson – Watch out! Only a short bit of sightseeing in Red Square, The Kremlin, and St. Basil’s Cathedral – the famous church with colored onion shaped tops. When the Tsar saw the Cathedral for the first time, he loved it so much he had the eyes removed from the architect so he could never repeat his creation. We learned that Red Square is so named because of all of the blood spilled there. The show in a very famous Ballet Theater was sold out, in fact 600 tickets sold over capacity. After the show, we went to an old castle-like building that featured knife throwing and archery ranges while you were eating. The champion snowboarder and the editor of Russian Elle Magazine joined us. We feasted on caviar and a traditional Russian meal complete of course with Vodka. 2/3 Around 2:00 pm, as we prepared for our train journey from Moscow to Warsaw, we felt that something was wrong, but no one would tell us. They would mention a country, Belarus, but we were not familiar with it. We boarded the train with a Russian translator and began our eighteen hour trek across Russia.

The World Of Sinch

Posted on February 12, 2008

So, just a couple quick lines on the current doings of Sinch. First on the list, the band – as told previously – is “100% focusing” on writing new material…and along the way, posting up some rarities at their website. The latest coming from the Sinch line of fire is what we shall call ‘Face Culture.’ During a previous trip to Germany and Amsterdam, Jamie (vocals) and Tony (guitar) did one of them there video interviews for ‘Face Culture.’ And now, part 1 of the video interview with Jamie from the ‘American rock band’ Sinch is now online. You can check it out for yourself at this HERE link. Next, any of you nerds (and we mean that in the nicest possible way) ever check out TechTV.com? No? Well here’s a reason to check it out: Sinch’s Jay Smith is heading out to San Francisco to be a guest on their show “The Screen Savers.” His air date will be March 27th – the show airs live each weekday at from 4 – 5:00pm PST. Check it out online at www.techtv.com/screensavers. And more? Yes there is. However, check out www.Sinch.net and read/listen/view for yourself.
