KHOMA

Posted on February 12, 2008

Roadrunner Records is proud to announce their latest signing – KHOMA. Hailing from Ume퀌«, a hotbed of Swedish talent (Cult Of Luna, Refused, Meshuggah, International Noise Conspiracy etc), Khoma was born in 2002. Conceived from a fusion of the long established local hardcore scene and a more diverse, emotive pop scene, Khoma has two faces. One that writes, rehearses, and records songs, and another that gathers to play live. The core of Khoma is always static – vocalist Jan J퀌_mte, guitarist Johannes Persson, and Fredrik Kihlberg on guitar/piano – but the surrounding band members are a rolling collective of musicians. The band hail from varied musical backgrounds and all members still play in a number of different groups: Cult of Luna, The Perishers, and the Deportees to name three. Accordingly, Khoma began as a side project. í¢ä‰åñWe weren’t even a real band, merely a project filling a musical void, something we created because we felt a need to play togetherí¢ä‰åŒ, explains Jan. í¢ä‰åñSince we had no real goals and no one expected anything, we also had nothing to lose. It was all about the music.í¢ä‰åŒ With no pressure and total creative freedom, the members wrote the music they personally wanted to hear. The result was a harsh, emotional, and intense mixture of sweeping melodies and roaring guitars. í¢ä‰åñKhoma is a breathing space where the different styles fuseí¢ä‰åŒ, Jan elaborates. í¢ä‰åñWe have a vision of creating heavy music that reflects more feelings than just sheer aggression. Sometimes whispering can be more powerful than screaming.í¢ä‰åŒ A few months in, things were beginning to take off for the band. A limited 1000-disc run of debut album ‘Tsunami’ was released and quickly sold out. It was reprinted and quickly sold out again. The band was taken by surprise by the phenomenal response and signed with a management company to enable them to keep focusing on the music, rather than the business. Without having signed a record deal, Khoma started to work on the follow-up to ‘Tsunami’. It soon became obvious that they had to do something about the line-up. Since members often were scattered around the globe it was almost impossible to play live. Khoma decided to create two faces: í¢ä‰åñOf course it’s sadí¢ä‰åŒ, says Fredrik. í¢ä‰åñIt would be better if we could all stick together but it’s impossible. In a way Khoma was not meant to be, and we’ve had to adjust ourselves to that situation. Our main concern has always been about writing music. Khoma is the creative process, our collective effort.í¢ä‰åŒ Besides playing music, the members of Khoma are political animals. This reflects back on Khoma in the member’s words and actions. They all hold strong views on issues and ideologies spanning from anarchism, feminism and socialism to animal and environmental rights. This doesn’t mean they are aiming to be í¢ä‰åñthe new political rock bandí¢ä‰åŒ or wear their political beliefs on their sleeves. It is purely something about who they are, what they believe in and what they stand for. In creating their most recent music, the band have broadened their perspective and introduced new elements most notably cello and piano. í¢ä‰åñI don’t think that we have any limitations when it comes to ‘do퉌Çs and don’ts’ in our songsí¢ä‰åŒ, comments Jan. í¢ä‰åñWe just don’t think about music in that way. Too many bands are stuck, sounding like something straight out of a production line. That’s not why we play music. Khoma is still a way of expressing diversity, not limiting us to just anger, depression or happiness. We’re diverse as people. We want to be free. Our music should incorporate all of that.í¢ä‰åŒ í¢ä‰åñFor us it’s all about freedom and quality of lifeí¢ä‰åŒ, says Jan. í¢ä‰åñKhoma is not something that we’ve started to í¢ä‰åñmake ití¢ä‰åŒ, to sell thousands of records or to become icons. We just want to write and play this music and in order for us to do that we have to feel free, both personally and creatively. The plan is still the same. It hasn’t changed.í¢ä‰åŒ Khoma have an epic sound of their own. Look for an album release in April 2006.

DELIVERING THE TRUTH

Posted on February 12, 2008

Bleeding Through have announced the tracklist for their January album ‘The Truth’. The follow-up to the group’s breakthrough album, “This Is Love. This Is Murderous”, was produced by Rob Caggiano, who has previously worked with CRADLE OF FILTH and DRY KILL LOGIC, in addition to playing guitar for ANTHRAX for several years. In a recent interview with MeinlCymbals.com, BLEEDING THROUGH drummer Derek Youngsma spoke about the recording process for “The Truth” and the band’s choice of producers for their latest effort. “We went with [Rob] because we were really impressed with stuff he had done in the past,” Derek said. “We’re going for the big heavy sound on this record and we know he can make the mix. He also came in as an outside listener and gave us an honest opinion on the songs. When you write something and play it so many times, you begin to start to ignore little things, because you’re so used to them. So he came in with fresh ears and heard these finished songs for the first time. He noticed little things that will make a big difference. For example he’d say, ‘That chorus is great, your going to want it again later in the song,’ and it makes perfect sense, as the part he was speaking of is catchy and listeners will have it stuck in their head after hearing it. As far as drums go, we just went for a really good natural sound (no triggers). So we spent a lot of time on drum sounds. We’d try different snare drums, different dampening and tuning on the toms and kicks, different microphones, placing of the microphones, etc. He also pushed me to play my ass off in the studio. I’d do a take of a song and he’d say, ‘That was great now do it again.’ Again and again and again.” “The Truth” track listing: 01. Love In Slow Motion 02. Tragedy Of Empty Streets 03. For Love And Failing 04. Kill To Believe 05. She’s Gone 06. Confession 07. Line In The Sand 08. The Painkiller 09. Dearly Demented 10. Return To Sender 11. Hollywood Prison 12. The Truth “This Is Love, This Is Murderous” has sold more than 100,000 copies in the United States alone, and the band hope to return to Australia during 2006.

THE END

Posted on February 12, 2008

Roadrunner United are set to release ‘The End’ on 7th November, the first single taken from their unique 25th anniversary ‘The All-Star Sessions’ album project. CLICK HERE to view the ecard for the single. The album, which is in stores NOW, came together under the eye of Roadrunner Records’ longtime A&R man, Monte Conner. The staggering project combines 55 artists from 42 different Roadrunner bands, all collaborating on a selection of brand new songs written by 4 appointed ‘team leaders’ í¢ä‰åäóì Slipknot’s Joey Jordison, Machine Head’s Robert Flynn, Trivium’s Matt Heafy and former Fear Factory man, Dino Cazares. ‘The End’ is one of the tracks written and performed by ‘Team Dino’. Here’s Dino to tell you the story behind the songí¢ä‰åŒ_ “It was conceived in 2001 in Germany backstage in a dressing room at a club. My guitar was plugged into a practice amp, listening through my headphones. I was still on tour with Fear Factory, but writing songs for another project because I knew the breakup was inevitable, and this is what I was feeling at the time. Then earlier this year, Monte Conner called me and asked if I’d be a team captain for the Roadrunner United All Stars. I was honoured. He also asked if I would re-record the song. I was hesitant at first because it’s more mellow than my usual work, and it’s unique because it’s not something I would normally write. Monte saw the bigger picture for the song, and him being a good friend I trusted his judgement. So I decided to re-record it.í¢ä‰åŒ Other featured musicians on the single include former Coal Chamber bassist, Nadja Peulen, former Soulfly drummer, Roy Mayorga, keyboards are handled by Front Line Assembly founder, Rhys Fulber, while Dino Cazares handles guitars along with former Machine Head guitarist, Logan Mader. The track was also produced by Cazares and mixed by Mader. “Now that the music was recorded, picking the singer was the hard part. Monte Conner asked what I thought of Matt Heafy possibly singing on this track. My response was, Matt who? I had the Trivium CD, it’s killer, but I wasn’t familiar with Matt himself, him being a new kid on the block and me being a veteran. I sent Matt the track and he just felt it. He said he had always wanted to sing a song like this. After he recorded the vocals, he sent Monte and me the song. I didn’t know what to expect, after all he’s only 19. I played the track and my jaw dropped. I was blown away by this kid’s talent. Not only can he sing brutal but he has an amazing melodic voice…and I’m honoured that Roadrunner picked this track to be the first single and the first video. This song cannot be compared to any of my other work because it’s totally different, but in itself it’s an amazing song.” The promo video for the track was shot in downtown Los Angeles and can be found on a music channel near you soon. Be sure to check out ‘Scuzz’ and Kerrang! TV over the coming weeks. CLICK HERE to view the ECARD

NICKELBACK ROCK THE FLOCK AT SHEPHERDS BUSH

Posted on February 12, 2008

We would like to give a big thanks to Jo for putting together this live review from Nickelbacks Shephards Bush show. Remember Nickelbacks latest album All The Right Reasons is out now. CLICK HERE to view the ecard. It was like they had never been awayí¢ä‰åŒ_ Nickelback hit the the Shepherds bush empire in London with avengeance for a one-off low-key show in support of a new single, new album and with a new band-member. The Kroeger brothers (Chad and Mike) guitarist Ryan Peake were joined by Daniel Adair on his first outing with the band in the Uk . The venue trembled with the roar of the 2000 die hard Nickelback fans as the lights went down to the pounding of Queens í¢ä‰åñwe will rock youí¢ä‰åŒ Kroeger and co emerged onto the stage and tore into the crowd with ‘Flat On The Floor’ from their last album, The Long Road .. a pick of the best including Woke Up This Morning, Breathe, Leader Of Men and Never Again showed without doubt, They just get better with each performance, Chad couldn’t contain the broad smile as the band kicked into the latest release í¢ä‰åñPhotographí¢ä‰åŒ from the album í¢ä‰åñAll The Right Reasonsí¢ä‰åŒ as the crowd more or less took over ever word, the lack of the pyrotechnics which would not have been possible to host at this venue were somewhat substituted by the podiums either side of the stage, far more an outstanding view as the Kroeger brothers and Peake strode up much to the delight of the ladies in the front row who were left begging for more of the crotch filled guitar solos. not even a sudden surge of power which knocked out the set twice throughout í¢ä‰åñbecause of youí¢ä‰åŒ could dampen the spirit of the crowd as Kroeger announced í¢ä‰åñIf this goes down a third time, you guys get your money back, and we still fucking playí¢ä‰åŒ The rest of the performance was flawless, previewing new material such as í¢ä‰åñFollow you homeí¢ä‰åŒ, which would stand in its own right as a single release, mixed with the old favorites which was clearly what the fans wanted. Time for beer o clock with the pint pots of Carling reaching high into the seated areas of the venue accompanied by Timmy firing off T shirts into the crowd from a cannon, one of the highlights of the show was Peake and Kroeger picking out fans from the crowd to join Daniel Adair on stage for a í¢ä‰åñbeer chugging contestí¢ä‰åŒ once again showing that these guys are second to none when it comes to fan/band interaction. With a cover of í¢ä‰åñSeek and Destroy by Metallica, Adair’s outstanding performance with his drum solo, they drew the show to a close with í¢ä‰åñFigured you outí¢ä‰åŒ the í¢ä‰åñDirty little numberí¢ä‰åŒ .as Kroeger playfully named it. Chatting to their fans, Posing for photographs and signing posters etc, are all part of Nickelback,s way of just how much they appreciate their fans after their shows, and I can’t fault their loyalty. A Uk tour is expected early 2006. Set List Flat On The Floor Woke Up This Morning Photograph Breathe Someday Leader Of Men Never Again Because Of You Drum Solo Follow You Home – incredible Too Bad How You Remind Me Figured You Out Support Act : Save Ourselves.
