BARKING UP THE RIGHT TREE

Posted on February 12, 2008

Roadrunner Records is delighted to welcome epic rockers PORCUPINE TREE to our family. 퉌æ Porcupine Tree is unquestionably one of the most difficult-to-categorise and innovative bands out there. The music is breathtaking, ranging from psychedelic trip-hop to progressive metal, and a compendium of other sounds in between. 퉌æ Evolving from one man’s self-indulgent creative outlet back in 1992, Porcupine Tree has grown into a well respected major-label-signed four-piece who have released several albums. Their most recent, 2005’s ‘Deadwing’, served to further skyrocket the band’s renown and they are currently hard at work on a brand new record – set for release on Roadrunner (excluding North America and Japan) in early 2007. 퉌æ The band is fronted by singer/guitarist Steven Wilson, who also is well-known for his production work (Opeth, Anja Garbarek) and other musical projects: No-Man, Bass Communion, and Blackfield – the highly acclaimed collaboration with Israeli musician Aviv Geffen. Richard Barbieri (keyboards), Colin Edwin (bass), and Gavin Harrison (drums) complete the quartet. í‰Œæ “Porcupine Tree are extremely happy about our new partnership with Roadrunner Records for our forthcoming album,” comments Wilson. “Roadrunner has established itself as one of the world’s premier independent labels for rock music, and we couldn’t be more enthusiastic about working with them to expand our audience and elevate Porcupine Tree to the next level.” 퉌æ Experience Porcupine Tree live – including some forthcoming new songs – at these dates: 퉌æ Sep 13 2006퉌æ퉌æCAMBRIDGE, UK:퉌æThe Junction Sep 15 2006퉌æ퉌æPARIS, France:퉌æElys퀌©e Montmartre Sep 16 2006퉌æ퉌æANTWERP, Belgium:퉌æHof Ter Lo Sep 18 2006퉌æ퉌æROME, Italy:퉌æTeatro Tendastrisce Sep 19 2006퉌æ퉌æMILAN, Italy:퉌æRolling Stone Sep 21 2006퉌æ퉌æPRATTELN, Switzerland:퉌æZ7 Sep 22 2006퉌æ퉌æM퀁ñNCHEN, Germany:퉌æMuffathalle Sep 23 2006퉌æ퉌æSAARBR퀁ñCKEN, Germany:퉌æGarage Sep 25 2006퉌æ퉌æHAMBURG, Germany:퉌æGro퀁Ÿe Freiheit 36 Sep 26 2006퉌æ퉌æESSEN, Germany:퉌æWeststadthalle Sep 27 2006퉌æ퉌æAMSTERDAM, The Netherlands:퉌æParadiso Sep 29 2006퉌æ퉌æLONDON, UK:퉌æAstoria Sep 30 2006퉌æ퉌æMANCHESTER, UK:퉌æManchester University Oct 01 2006퉌æ퉌æGLASGOW, UK:퉌æCarling Academy Oct 05 2006퉌æ퉌æBOSTON, USA:퉌æBerklee Performance Center Oct 06 2006퉌æ퉌æNEW YORK, New York, USA:퉌æNokia Theater Oct 07 2006퉌æ퉌æPHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, USA:퉌æKeswick Theater Oct 11 2006퉌æ퉌æLOS ANGELES, California, USA:퉌æHouse of Blues Oct 13 2006퉌æ퉌æSAN FRANCISCO, California, USA:퉌æFillmore 퉌æ Porcupine Tree will also release their first live DVD, titled ‘Arriving Somewhere…’, on October 9. 퉌æ For more information check out the band’s official website at www.porcupinetree.com. 퉌æ

DRAGONFORCE ? TRIVIUM ? METALLICA

Posted on February 12, 2008

Kirk Hammett – the new champion of Roadrunner? Steve Baltin of AOL Music recently asked METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett which new guitarists have impressed him of late. “I really like this absurd band called DRAGONFORCE,” Kirk said. “Those are the fastest guitar players I think I’ve ever seen. They’re like Yngwie [Malmsteen] on steroids. No, they’re like Barry Bonds on guitar. It’s amazing. I saw one video and I swear to God the guy must’ve played 75,000 notes*.” As for some of the other music Hammett’s been digging, he said, “I like MUSE, MARS VOLTA, TRIVIUM, THE SWORD. I think WOLFMOTHER is fun. THE BLACK KEYS. And I’ve been listening to HANK WILLIAMS, because you’ve just got to. It’s as heavy as ROBERT JOHNSON or BOB DYLAN.” What was the last concert he saw? “Must’ve been our own show on YouTube. I was watching our Moscow show from 1991 and thinking, ‘Damn, we were good that night. What happened?'” *we checked this statistic with Herman & Sam, and apparently he was at least 4,500 notes off.

PREPARE FOR THE CRUSADES

Posted on February 12, 2008

Yessssss, Trivium’s new album ‘The Crusade’ will be released on October 9th. There’s no such thing as being born to greatness. To succeed in the world of music you have to work hard. Trivium have earned their major league status. Trivium’s 2005 sophomore release (and Roadrunner debut) ‘Ascendancy’ brought the formidable foursome worldwide critical and commercial acclaim and has seen them grace over a dozen magazine front covers in the UK alone í¢ä‰åäóì plus land a daytime playlist slot on Radio 1. Combined with the band’s live prowess, sharpened from relentless international touring (over 350 shows in the last two years), their new album ‘The Crusade’ is one of the most hotly anticipated rock albums of 2006. í¢ä‰åñThis album is borne out of everything that’s happened in the UK and America,í¢ä‰åŒ says Matt Heafy, the band’s 20 year old frontman. í¢ä‰åñAs it developed, we realised we were making something really special. As a band, you can either release the same album again, keeping the same number of people interested and not really branch out, or you can evolve. I feel that ‘The Crusade’ is the next logical step in our evolution. To me, ‘The Crusade’ is still Trivium. We took one big step between the first two albums, but this time we’ve taken about ten huge leaps forward.í¢ä‰åŒ Recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with Jason Suecof co-producing, ‘The Crusade’ is a faithful account of a fledgling band’s swift and bewildering evolution, from up-and-comer to world-beating behemoth. It’s a dazzling explosion of neck-snapping riffs, grandiose choruses and outstanding musicianship from all four members of the band. Drummer Travis Smith underpins the sharp brutality of his band’s songs with a startlingly dexterous percussive attack, all machine-gun kick drums and octopoid bursts of round-the-kit athleticism. Bassist Paolo Gregoletto reveals a hitherto unheard depth and maturity to his playing through the album as well his inspired note-heavy runs and earthshaking bottom end providing a devastating counterpoint to his band mates’ deft compositions. Finally, both frontman Heafy and his six-string counterpart Corey Beaulieu have reached a new plateau of blurred-finger brilliance, with instantly memorable riffs and ear-searing fret-melting solos. Additionally, on the album, Heafy sounds more raw, aggressive and emotive than ever before. From the opening future-thrash twin-blast of ‘Ignition’ and ‘Detonation’, with their anthemic refrains and blizzards of lacerating lead work, ‘The Crusade’ is clearly a body of work that will raise the bar for rock bands around the world. There’s the staggering lead single ‘Anthem (We Are The Fire)’, which blends the scathing thrash riffs of Megadeth with the infectious swagger of M퀌_tley Cr퀌_e at their succinct best. The intricate, rumbling bludgeon of ‘Becoming The Dragon’ has a pummeling, cyclical rhythmic drive and soaring, left-of-centre chorus. The doom-laden, emotion-stuffed ‘And Sadness Will Sear’, reveals a new, darker, edgier side to Trivium’s otherwise hook-laden chops. The deceptively accessible ‘The Rising’ is a sumptuous hymn hewn from the juiciest licks that boasts a phenomenal crowd-rousing chorus… imploring the faithful to ‘Raise your voices with meí¢ä‰åŒ_and sing this song of unity!’ This collection of gems culminates in the album’s monumental, shape-shifting title track an eight-and-a-half minute instrumental monstrosity that twists, turns and torments the listener with rapid-fire tempo shifts, immaculate musicianship and a thrilling sense of adventure. Indeed, it’s a glorious end to a collection of songs that seems destined to cement Trivium’s reputation as one of the top rock bands of their generation. í¢ä‰åñWe’re four very determined people,í¢ä‰åŒ concludes Heafy. í¢ä‰åñWhen I was 12 years old and got into metal, I wanted to be in a huge band. That will never change. We don’t take anything for granted and will work hard to make that dream come true. And we’ve only just started.í¢ä‰åŒ Tracklisting for ‘The Crusade’ is as follows: 1. Ignition 2. Detonation 3. Entrance of the Conflagration 4. Anthem (We are the Fire) 5. Unrepentant 6. And Sadness Will Sear 7. Becoming the Dragon 8. To The Rats 9. This World Can’t Tear Us Apart 10. Tread the Floods 11. Contempt Breeds Contamination 12. The Rising 13. The Crusade
