Skiddle’s Unholy Alliance

Posted on February 12, 2008

Review: Unholy Alliance Tour @ Glasgow Secc 26th Oct 2004 by Gavin McInally (Skiddle.com) Slipknot/Slayer – Glasgow SECC – Oct 2nd. Angel of Death, (Sic), Final Prayer, Postmortem, I Will Be Heard, Spit It Out… Not since the second glorious day of this year’s Download Festival has such an aural orgasm been so readily available. For one night only, Scottish fans were treated to the same metal feast their English counterparts enjoyed over the summer, as the Unholy Alliance crashed into the cavernous halls of the SECC. Slipknot just don’t head up shit bills do they? In America they jaunt around with the likes of System of a Down, Rammstein and Mudvayne while the last time they plied there trade in Glasgow, One Minute Silence, In Flames and American Head Charge were in tow. So it would make sense not to get stuck in traffic on route to the venue, miss the doors opening and the first band – the much hyped, Mastodon, wouldn’t it? Anyway… Hatebreed. Playing beneath Slayer must be a boxer-filling thought for any band. Bigger names than Hatebreed have weakly plundered through their sets to a defiant chorus of ‘Slayer! Slayer!’ facing them. However, Jamey Jasta and co. look as though they’d savage pack of rabid dogs without breaking sweat and their confident display is brutal, winning over the crowd with ease. A scene of total pandemonium for closer I Will Be Heard rounds of a triumphant debut Scottish show. Despite all the gripes from Slayer fans about the billing (one twat even stages a feeble protest by facing the back wall during Slipknot’s set) the thrash legends are never treated as a support act. With an impressive stage set-up, a 14 song set list and an encore they could easily have been mistaken as headliners. The fact remains though, if Slipknot weren’t the topping the show, the Barrowlands would have been all Slayer could have hoped for. Ripping into their astounding set with Disciple, Tom Araya let’s us know God hates us all, and for the next hour or so, we hate him right back devil worship has never been so much fun. Warzone, Season In The Abyss, Mandatory Suicide and Angel of Death are all pummelled out with such ferocity the metal masses can only pretend to keep up with their Kerry King signed air guitars and drum kits. And just when it looks like another legendary Slayer show has to be committed to memory they reappear with a blistering encore of Ditto Head and Raining Blood… People have cried tears of joy for much less. Only three albums into their, sometimes precariously balanced, masked careers and Slipknot have finally ditched the carnival fayre style live show. Pyrotechnics, flame cannons, snow machines and rotating drum kits have all been packed up, stamped and posted to the Limp Bizkit boys, making way for the real reason we all (twat excluded, of course) love them. With such an awesome back catalogue supporting new material from ‘Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses’ the likes of Liberate and the watered-down Left Behind are discarded. At their glorious best, and sounding more determined than ever, Corey Taylor orchestrates Slipknot through Pulse Of The Maggots, Heretic Anthem and Wait and Bleed. But it’s the insane Surfacing that closes a truly unbelievable night of music. Hardcore, thrash and nu-metal an Unholy Alliance not to be broken.

Getting To Know Zao (pt 5)

Posted on February 12, 2008

Name? Stephen Peck Age? 26 Instrument? Drums How long have you been playing for? 11 years All time favourite record? “The Spine” by They Might Be Giants – they just keep getting better. I could listen to it constantly and never get tired of it. Greatest experience on tour? Being accepted as the new drummer of Zao, accomplishing the tough task of filling Jesse Smith’s shoes. Most horrible experience on tour? Getting horribly drunk at a NYC show and sleeping in the van outside the hotel, only to have the police wake us up! Most embarrassing moment ever on stage? Drumset falling apart at the Wupperlal show in Germany! Do you have any sort of ritual before going on stage? Stretching the legs & arms, and drinking beer! With which band would you love to tour with? They Might Be Giants – my favourite band but not a good match for Zao – oh well! If I couldn’t be a musician, I would work as… A graphic designer, or working in film production. Best advice you ever heard? Stay far away from woman (they’re evil). Just kidding, they are alright, can’t live without ’em! With which famous person (alive or dead) would you love to spend some time and why? Steven Spielberg, because he us the master. What’s one thing you would like to achieve in life? Get married, have a house, and have children. Last Words: Vote for Pedro.

36 Corporation

Posted on February 12, 2008

A review of the Sheffield Corporation date, by Dave Musson from Sheffield Uni Student Paper. “36 Crazyfists vocalist and guitarist Brock Lindow and Steve Holt are two very relaxed men. As they stand in the main floor of the Corporation before the doors are opened to the mass of fans outside, they have every right to be. í¢ä‰åñThe tour’s been going greatí¢ä‰åŒ Holt says enthusiastically, í¢ä‰åñwe’ve sold out all but three of the dates which is amazing.í¢ä‰åŒ Lindow adds, í¢ä‰åñWe love playing the UK because it’s always been so good to us. The album is doing really well and the kids here go mad at our shows. It makes sure we keep doing what we do.í¢ä‰åŒ Far from slowing down as this current tour winds down, the band are as keen as ever to get out there and play to their public. As they head backstage to prepare you can feel the confidence that a band gets from having a great album and a brilliant live show. You feel like they aren’t going to disappoint you, and they definitely don’t. However you don’t get this lucky with every band you see. The Corp soon fills up with an unnervingly large number of emo kids, who are fiddling with their hair, making sure their jeans are as low as possible and waiting for some action. This is, no doubt, why openers Bullet for My Valentine go down so well. They further confirm that emo is í¢ä‰åña South Wales thingí¢ä‰åŒ, sounding just like Funeral for a Friend but with no movement whatsoever on stage and no real originality to their very generic songs. Despite this the rest of the crowd love them and they get a great reception. Next up are South California fashion-core stalwarts Eighteen Visions. They take the stage with confidence and a super tight performance. Vocalist James Stephan Hart, who looks like the twin that Coby Dick never knew existed, shows himself to be an excellent front man and covers as much of the stage as you can in a half an hour slot. Their mixture of glam rock poses with hardcore riffs has a very original feel to it and is well received by the now very warm crowd. More shows like this and they could certainly move up in the world. The cold weather outside is nothing compared to what the headliners are used to, being from Alaska, which begs the question as to whether they are the only band to come from somewhere colder than Sheffield? Well, they’re certainly in contention. From the moment they kick into í¢ä‰åñAt the End of Augustí¢ä‰åŒ, the crowd go insane and the venue comes to life. The band make the most of their hour time slot by playing just about all of their current album í¢ä‰åñA Snow Capped Romanceí¢ä‰åŒ, which goes down a treat and prompts singing along to almost every word. Lindow is on top form as he quivers and screams his way through the set whilst hopping around the stage like a madman. 36 have always been a band with a strong band-fan relationship and tonight is no exception. Lindow repeatedly thanks the crowd between songs as well as promising to return to the Steel City as soon as they can. Needless to say this is greeted with huge cheers. Their set flies by all too fast and before we knew where we were the band were pounding out show closer í¢ä‰åñSlit Wrist Theoryí¢ä‰åŒ and leaving the stage triumphantly with heads held high. They now head back home to play a homecoming show before planning what’s next for them. Although nothing is concrete yet, with a live show like this you feel that the demand for them in this country won’t waver. Let’s hope they come back soon.”

Machine Head Postpone Italian Shows

Posted on February 12, 2008

MACHINE HEAD have been forced to postpone their previously announced shows in Rome and Vicenza (Oct. 25-26), Italy after their tour bus broke down on their way through Swiss Alps this weekend. Stranded in Zurich, with no other buses available (due to heavy European touring at the moment) and no other way to transport the band and their equipment to Rome in time, they are unfortunately forced to wait for repairs to be finished, which looks to be no sooner than this coming Wednesday (Oct. 27). “MACHINE HEAD extends their sincerest apologies, and are making all efforts to reschedule both shows for a later date,” reads a posting on the group’s web site. “Note: GOD FORBID and CALIBAN may still be playing both of the scheduled dates í¢ä‰åäó be sure to check with the local venue for up-to-date information.”

Remastered Fear

Posted on February 12, 2008

As one of the first bands in modern metal to mix hardcore with industrial beats and synthesizers, LA’s Fear Factory also experimented with full album remixes long before the practice came into vogue. Beyond that, vocalist, Burton C. Bell took inspiration from singers like Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, Andrew Eldridge from Sisters of Mercy and The Mission UK’s Wayne Hussey to forge a distinctive vocal style blending melodic lyrical delivery with aggressive vocals. This year’s 5th studio album ,’Archetype’, saw the band return to their full-on aggressive cybermetal roots. However… forming in 1990, the band released it’s debut, ‘Soul Of A New Machine’, in 1992. Combining both Metal and Industrial elements, Fear Factory laid a groundwork that spawned the classic ‘Demanufacture’ opus and the Gold-selling album ‘Obsolete’ and paved the way for a whole new wave of bands including Filter, Static X & Stabbing Westward. Now from Nov 1 2004, you will be able to get your hands on a special remastered package of ‘Soul Of A New Machine’ that also includes the 1993 ‘Fear Is The Mind Killer’ EP, which showed Fear Factory’s willingness to experiment with its music and broaden its scope by placing tracks from its debut in the hands of remixers Rhys Fulber and Bill Leeb of Front Line Assembly. TRACKLISTING: CD1 í¢ä‰åäóì ‘SOUL OF A NEW MACHINE’ 1. Martyr 2. Leechmaster 3. Scapegoat 4. Crisis 5. Crash Test 6. Flesh Hold 7. Lifeblind 8. Scumgrief 9. Natividad 10. Big God/Raped Souls 11. Transylvania 90210

Posted on February 12, 2008

Los Angeles, CA – Wednesday 13, of Murderdolls fame, has signed to Roadrunner Records as a solo artist and will be unleashing TRANSYLVANIA 90210 í¢ä‰åäóì SONGS OF DEATH, DYING AND THE DEAD on the label in early 2005. The band, currently comprised of Wednesday on vocals/guitar, Ghastly on drums, Kid Kid on bass and Pig on guitar will begin touring in short order in the UK. They plan to storm the US sometime in early 2005. Wednesday 13’s new album reaches new heights in Horror-Core. “I’m really happy that Roadrunner has decided to get behind me on this record,í¢ä‰åŒ says Wednesday. í¢ä‰åñI think after the Murderdolls album we now have a better idea of how to push this release. This album is just a natural progression for me. Does it sound like Murderdolls or (Wednesday’s pre-Murderdolls band) Frankenstein Drag Queens? Yes, and No. I did some things different from how Murderdolls would,, but its still the same voice. And I hate when people use the word mature, in describing how they have progressed from one album to the other. I’m still just the same guy obsessed with horror movies, cartoons, and death.í¢ä‰åŒ TRACK LISTING – TRANSYLVANIA 90210 í¢ä‰åäóì SONGS OF DEATH, DYING AND THE DEAD 1. Post Mortem Boredom 2. Look What The Bats Dragged In 3. I Walked With A Zombie 4. Haunt Me 5. God Is A Lie 6. I Want You…Dead 7. The Ghost Of Vincent Price 8. Rot For Me 9. Transylvania 90210 10. Elect Death For President 11. Bad Things 12. House By The Cemetery 13. A Bullet Named Christ Of the tracks on the new album, Wednesday adds í¢ä‰åñThere are a few surprises that the fans won’t expect… The title TRANSYLVANIA 90210 í¢ä‰åäóì SONGS OF DEATH, DYING AND THE DEAD comes from the idea of what I think a Wednesday 13 TV show would be like, it’s like each song is an episode.” Tune in in 2005!
