Black Eyed Jericho

Posted on February 12, 2008

Hardcore troopers WALLS OF JERICHO have preserved the brutality of their live show for future generations of moshing masses in their new video for “There’s No I In Fuck You!” The video was directed by Kevin Leonard who also shot videos for TERROR, HIMSA and NEVERMORE. The video visualizes the idolatry of rock stars and goes on to refute this idea of glamour and stardom. “It’s not about being rock stars it’s about being real people,” said lead singer Candace Kusculain. The video’s narrative is also interspersed with footage of the band’s live show at Chain Reaction in Anaheim. Normally, Monday nights are a bare-bones scene for concerts, but on the night of this show, WALLS OF JERICHO managed to pack the house to capacity, selling 500 tickets pre-sale for the 275-person venue and selling several thousand dollars worth of merchandise that night. Despite the fact that the band had to play “There’s No I in Fuck You!” three times in the set for different shots in the video, the crowd was just as excited for the second and third renditions as they were for the first. “The show was awesome. The kids were crazy,” says Kusculain. “One kid grabbed me and gave me a kiss on the cheek.” Unfortunately, kisses weren?t the only thing being distributed that night. During one song, an overzealous mosher took to the stage for a dive and somehow got his leg tangled in lead singer Candace Kusculain’s mic wire. Unfortunately, the wire was also wrapped around Candace’s wrist, resulting in a blow to her head. Luckily, Candace is no stranger to this kind of “on-the-job” injury. Having already sustained black eyes and a broken nose in previous shows, the most tenacious lead singer in all of hardcore, male or female, merely shrugged off the injury and soldiered on for the kids like she always does. “I didn’t even realize there was blood on my head. I didn’t even realize it was mine. It happens all the time. I’m sure people in the crowd got hit way harder than me.” And in true hardcore style, Kusculain continues good-naturedly, “I got a black eye last night. I woke up this morning, got a little shiner. I swear I’m gonna get something broken during this tour.” The frenzy of the live show only follows from where the music leads. Candace, along with guitarists Mike Hasty and Chris Rawson, bassist Aaron Ruby and drummer Alexei Rodriguez set the tone for a relentlessly chaotic show with their speedy metal guitars and crushingly dense breakdowns. In the past, WALLS OF JERICHO have played with the likes of GOD FORBID, FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES, MARTYR AD, 36 CRAZYFISTS, TERROR, THROWDOWN and MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD. More recently, the band has joined forces with BLEEDING THROUGH and IT DIES TODAY for a cross-country tour and will embark on a European tour with UNEARTH and SICK OF IT ALL in November. blabbermouth.net
